Maze Runner: The Death Cure Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs
2. The Terrific Visual Effects
Without question one of the most pervasive issues across YA franchises like The Hunger Games and Divergent is the low quality of the visual effects, because movie studios clearly assume that younger audiences aren't quite so fussy about wonky-looking CGI.
Well, The Death Cure continues the Maze Runner series' tradition of strong visual effects showcases, with clever use of digital effects to amplify the practical action, before giving over to a more overt yet well-executed CGI-fest in the third act.
That the film produced such visually striking, high-quality results on such a modest budget, thoroughly embarrassing the blurry ugliness of something like Justice League, again speaks to Ball's meticulous direction, and his clear desire to deliver a professional production.
Why can't more movies at this price point look this damn good?
