MCU: 10 Characters Most Likely To Die (And The Movies They'll Die In)
3. Maria Rambeau (Captain Marvel)
Why She's Likely To Die: Captain Marvel looks like it will be heavy on the flashbacks, with Carol Danvers' present-day mission to defeat the Skrulls (well, present-day for her in the 1990s) interspersed with scenes of her earlier days on Earth, both as a child and as an Air Force fighter pilot.
Regarding the latter, the first trailer showed Carol working with Maria Rambeau, one of her closest friends. Movies that weave in flashbacks alongside the main narrative typically do so by building to a tragic event in the character's past, whether that's to draw a parallel to their current situation, or reveal what made them the person they are today. And for Carol Danvers, it looks like that tragic event may be the death of Maria.
During the trailer, we're shown quick flashes of what looks like a crash involving a fighter jet: scrub to the "A Hero" text and watch as it fades out to see Carol - in her pilot outfit - looking sad and in distress, and move ahead ten seconds or so to see her walking away from a wreckage.
The above shot in particular looks like it follows on from the image we used at the top of this entry, which shows Carol and Maria heading out on a mission or training flight. Carol is wearing the exact same clothes in both shots.
The death of her best friend would give Carol a significant emotional event to push her forward, and honestly, what place does a human character like Maria have in the future of the MCU? This movie is set in the past, so she'll be much older in the present-day continuity. It just makes sense to kill her off here.
