MCU: 10 Fascinating Facts About Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
2. Iron Man's Role Was Initially Nick Fury's
With the quiet and controlled Nick Fury, and the extroverted unstable Tony Stark being polar opposites, it’s more than a little surprising to learn that Stark actually ended up in a role that was initially written for the more serious of the two.
But this is exactly the case, as director Jon Watts played around with the idea of Nick Fury featuring in the mentor role that Iron Man plays in the actual film. The idea was to have a character that Peter both feared, and desperately wanted the approval of – as well as mirroring his role in the Ultimate Spider-Man series.
Yet, with Parker and Stark’s clear skills with technology – and with Spider-Man starring alongside Iron Man in Civil War, which was also in production – it was felt that the superhero billionaire would serve as perhaps a better and more cohesive character for the role. However, this doesn’t mean Fury will never meet Peter in the future, so the dynamic between Fury and Spider-Man may still be used at some point in the film franchise.
