MCU: 10 Fascinating Facts Behind Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
6. Guardians' Inferno Is A Huge Star Wars Homage
Guardians' Inferno might be the greatest piece of art (and it is art) that Marvel has ever created. The song and music video are glorious, with David Hasselholf on vocals as the lead singer of a fake alien band, with the music video being a glorious ode to 70s disco, and featuring pretty much every main cast member in the best/worst costumes and wigs you'll ever see.
It's more than just a general, silly homage to the kind of music and styles that informed Guardians' own personality, but actually a throwback to Star Wars. It was inspired by the Meco disco version of the Star Wars theme - which actually shot to the top of the American charts in the 70s - and, specifically, a version of it which was performed on Top of the Pops.
Gunn explained all on his Facebook page, and not only is Meco's song a clear inspiration on Guardians' Inferno's production, but apparently even moments in the music video were direct homages to this weird Top of the Pops performance almost nobody except James Gunn remembers.
