MCU: 10 Fascinating Facts Behind Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

3. Anthony Hopkins' Commitment

Initially, Sir Anthony Hopkins didn't want to return as Odin and was quite open about his ambivalence to the role (having said he basically just did it for the money), but once he received the story, he changed his mind.

Ironically, his role then changed dramatically when test audiences reacted poorly to his part (hence his death scene being reshot and the so-called Hobo Odin being cut), so he'd signed up for a story that he'd eventually be largely cut out of.

Interestingly, when Taika Waititi told Hopkins that in his introductory scene he’d “be playing Tom Hiddleston playing you. And he said ‘Oh okay, good,’ and he turned up in blue eyeliner.”

And in other blue-face revelations, Waititi revealed he decided against making Jeff Goldblum's Grandmaster entirely blue (like in the comics), because he had already played a blue-colored character in Earth Girls Are Easy in 1988.
