When T'Challa was challenged to combat by M'Baku, he walked away victorious and earned his throne. Yet, when he received the same challenge from Erik Killmonger, fighting his cousin on the same stage he bested the leader of the Jabari tribe, the Black Panther fell to what the entire Wakandan nation believed to be his death.

After his victory, the new King N'Jadaka rose to power and began prepping the country for war. Meanwhile, T'Challa was kept on ice, and was nursed back to health, getting ready to return to the battlefield, declaring himself alive and well for all to see. This was the rallying cry that the those loyal to the King desperately needed.

Since neither man yielded, their battle never actually ended, meaning Killmonger's claim to the throne was null and void until he could defeat T'Challa once and for all. The passion and heart that the Black Panther poured into this fight embodied everything that made him one of the fiercest warriors in the entire MCU.

Despite the beating T'Challa took, and how close he ultimately came to death, he was still proud to fight for his throne, his family, and for the good of his nation, refusing to give so much as an inch to his opponent.
