MCU: 10 Phase 3 Rumours That Turned Out To Be Bull
5. Man-Ape Will Make An Appearance In Black Panther
Despite confirmation from the Marvel powers that be that Man-Ape – the villainous comic book alter ego of Winston Duke’s Jabari tribe leader M’Baku – would not be making an appearance in Black Panther, fans were pretty adamant that he’d still show up in some form.
This could’ve proved quite problematic considering the original imagining of Man-Ape. Conceived back in the far less progressive late 1960s, comic book Man-Ape wore a gorilla-like outfit and gained his powers by killing and eating the flesh of a rare white gorilla.
Thankfully, Marvel wisely steered clear of the racial implications of such a character by ditching the Man-Ape moniker and gorilla get-up, reimagining M’Baku as an anti-hero whose vegetarian tribe worships a gorilla god, but prefers not to dine on ape flesh.
A smart move on Marvel’s behalf that resulted in a brilliant breakout character far removed from his racist origins that proved one of Black Panther’s best.
