MCU: 11 Characters Who Should Return Through The Multiverse
9. Sandman (Thomas Haden Church)
Despite a very strong first two films in Raimi's Spider-Man franchise, the third entry was a disappointment due to a number of reasons, with the main one being the studio interference that resulted in the addition of Venom to the story. However, despite the project being an overall disappointment, the portrayal of Sandman was one of the few highlights.
Thomas Haden Church's version of Flint Marko was seen committing crimes in order to raise money to pay for the medical bills of his sick daughter. This made the villain sympathetic as his goals were not nefarious despite the character breaking the law. The character was even reluctant to take down Spider-Man, but felt there was no other choice due to the hero getting in the way of his mission.
Although the retcon of Marko being responsible for Uncle Ben's death was not taken well by fans, the overall character of Sandman was well received, with the redemption of the character at the end of the film feeling earned.
No fan would complain if we saw Church's portrayal of the character return in the MCU, even if he joins the film as a member of the Sinister Six. However, Marvel must keep the sympathetic aspect of the character intact, which could mean that Marko is forced make an alliance like the one he made with Venom in order to get Spider-Man out of his way.
