MCU: 12 Things You Learn Rewatching Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2

1. The Final Battle Isn't That Interesting

As visually impressive as this film is, and as entertaining a villain as Ego is, the final battle between the Guardians and Ego is actually kinda dull.

With a generic "blow up the core" mission objective for the other Guardians, this is a perfect example of a superhero movie expanding the scale to its own detriment. When Ego becomes a giant planetary face and starts attacking the Guardians with giant tentacles, it's decidedly less involving than Peter and Ego just going at it on the surface of the planet.

Sure, the Pac-Man beat is undeniably entertaining and Ego's planet literally having a giant brain at the centre is delightfully offbeat, but for the most part, the action and effects just feel a little too overblown for their own good.

The best moment in the whole sequence is Ego's desperate plea with Peter not to blow his brain up, because it's actually rooted in the character's most basic motivation and is superbly acted by Russell. The relentless digital mayhem? Not so much.
