MCU: 12 Things You Learn Rewatching Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2
6. Kurt Russell Gives One Of The MCU's Best Villain Performances
It wasn't exactly a well-kept secret ahead of Vol. 2's release that Ego (Kurt Russell) would be the movie's main villain, but what is surprising is that it allowed Russell to give one of the strongest performances of any antagonist in the MCU to date.
The beauty of casting Russell is him being renowned as a charming, bada** actor who basically every film lover born in the 80s would kill to hang out with. His likeability is crucial to both Peter and the audience being seduced by him, while of course giving Peter a father who's remotely as cool as David freaking Hasselhoff.
This makes the eventual reveal, unsurprising though it is, all the more disturbing and effective, especially once Ego's mass grave of dead progeny is discovered and he casually announces that he put a tumour in the head of Peter's mother.
The MCU may have a "villain problem", but regardless, Russell gives a stellar, unexpectedly nuanced performance as Ego, making him easily one the series' most interesting and memorable baddies to date.
