MCU: 12 Things You Learn Rewatching Thor: Ragnarok
10. Hela Has Surprisingly Little Screen Time
Hela may not be a top-tier MCU villain, but Cate Blanchett imbues her with sufficiently amusing campiness, ensuring she's a moderately entertaining - if undeniably underwritten - baddie for most of her screen time.
However, rewatching Ragnarok, it's surprising just how scant her appearances actually are. Until the final battle, Hela's scenes are fairly brief and peppered rather sparingly throughout, even sitting out almost the entirety of the movie's second act. Seriously, there's a 35-minute chunk in the middle of the movie where Hela's totally absent (unless you count the brief Valkyrie flashback).
Though this does give the Thor-Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) buddy vibe plenty of time to breathe, it as at the expense of the villain's sense of presence and personality. When she shows up again in time for the final battle, it's a legitimately jolting, "Oh yeah, her!" moment.
Whether this was a necessary move to accommodate Blanchett's busy schedule or an intentional structural device to foreground The Hulk in act two, it's pretty weird how little Hela is actually in the movie.
