You can argue that recent MCU movies have really spoiled audiences with more ambitious visual effects and cinematography - especially Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther - but these colourful, eye-popping movies only further underline how damn boring, even ugly, The Dark World is to look at.

From the earthy, washed-out drabness of Malekith's homeworld Svartalfheim, to the relentless grey skies of London, it's difficult to understand why such a visually repulsive palette was given the green-light, especially when the first Thor movie was actually pretty spritely.

It's somewhat appropriate, though, that the most generic and forgettable MCU movie to date also has the most workmanlike set of visuals.
