13. Fury's "Death" - Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Fake death is a way of life in the MCU, with Coulson, Pepper Potts and even Groot suffering from this temporary affliction at one stage. It never lasts, though, which is part of the reason the stakes can feel low in a lot of the MCU movies.
The trailers for The Winter Soldier heavily teased the death of Nick Fury, and the movie itself took the bold step of showing him die fairly conclusively. This passing gave the movie a heavy quality, showing the story had genuine stakes. The MCU would miss Sam Jackson however, so the third act reveals his demise was a big fake to throw the bad guys off the scent.
Of all the fake-out deaths, this one felt the cheapest and underlined Marvel’s weird aversion to occasionally killing off well-liked characters in service of the story.
