MCU: 20 Things You Somehow Missed In The Avengers
12. Loki, Brother Of Thor
Loki said it himself during his own Disney+ series, that his image was a cruel, elaborate trick conjured by the weak to inspire fear. Essentially, all he ever wanted was to step out from Thor’s huge shadow, and tried to do so in the only way he knew how.
This wasn’t exactly a secret, as Loki said so himself several times throughout his MCU run. He was sick of his brute of a brother living the easy life of Odin’s firstborn. All he ever wanted to be was the God of Thunder’s equal, but living in that shadow turned him bitter.
This was the motivation for pretty much everything Loki ever did, and there is a moment early on in The Avengers that sums this up perfectly. Just after Loki lands at S.H.I.E.L.D. and introduces himself to Nick Fury and co., he is recognised by Erik Selvig.
He calls Earth’s alien invader Loki, brother of Thor. Even on a world where he is mere legend, he cannot shake the stigma of being nothing more than Thor’s brother, and the look on his face tells the whole story. He is out to make a name for himself, and if ruling Earth is what it takes, then so be it.
