In 2017, Taika Waititi took the Thor franchise and turned it on its head. After the incredibly underwhelming Thor: The Dark World, excitement about the franchise was at an all time low. Ragnarok, however, couldn't be further from what preceded it, turning Thor back into one of the biggest franchises Marvel has in their arsenal.

There are so many reasons for the success of Ragnarok when compared to the Thor movies that came before it - one of which being the villain. While Hela didn't have much to live up to following Laufey and Malekith from 2011 and 2013 respectively, she proved a real threat to Thor and Asgard, demonstrating her power by almost instantly destroying one of the most powerful weapons in the universe.

Hela is charismatic, evil, and pissed off at being locked away for so long. All she wants is her birth right, the throne of Asgard, which by the letter of the law is hers. She is so powerful that Thor cannot defeat her, instead he resorts to essentially aiming Surtur at her.

The only complaint about Odin's first born is that she was somewhat under-used. There was so much potential for Cate Blanchett's character in the future of the MCU, and it is a shame she was seemingly destroyed in her first appearance.
