There are a couple of theories floating around on how the X-Men will be introduced into the MCU, though this is one of the most consistently popular ones. Sooner or later, the X-Men need to arrive, and Thanos provides an easily digestible and timely explanation. The Infinity Stones caused the X-Men to exist.

There's even the addition that it was through Hulk's snap, with his excess gamma, which may have been responsible, though they're two sides of the same coin. The basic theory is that the energy/radiation released from the stones had a mutating effect on some people, and thus the X-Men were born.

It would mean a considerable reinvention of the characters though. If they all suddenly appeared, there's no built up relationships, no Professor X vs Magneto, no special school... the Holocaust backstory for Magneto was probably no longer a viable option, given how long ago it would have happened, but to lose the rest seems a shame.

Eventually though, Marvel will need to make a choice. Some other theories allow them to keep the lore intact, but at the cost of a more convoluted introduction. Watch this space.
