MCU Phase 4: 15 Essential Rumours & Theories You Need To Know

7. Nova Will Expand Marvel's Cosmic Horizons

The Rumour:

Although a third Guardians of the Galaxy is set to move ahead at some stage, it seems pretty obvious now that the series is drawing to a close. Without James Gunn at the helm, there just doesn't seem to be that much enthusiasm for the team anymore, whether that be from the actors involved or from the potential replacements Disney have lined up in the wake of his firing.

With that in mind, and given Marvel's obvious enthusiasm for exploring their cosmic characters, it would be wise to assume they'll be looking at other characters to fill the void left by the Guardians' absence. One such character that has frequently been raised is Richard Rider, who becomes the Nova in the comics, and was heavily rumoured to appear in both of Gunn's movies.

The Response:

Like Moon Knight, Blade and Silver Surfer, it seems as though Marvel Studios are big fans of the character too. In an interview with Comicbook.com, Kevin Feige noted that a Nova movie has "immediate potential", and even noted the character's connections to the Guardians mythos.

Although this interview took place before Gunn's departure from Marvel, at which time Guardians 3 was on track for a 2020 release, it seems as though it's only a matter of time until Nova joins the fray, with Xandar now destroyed and the Nova Corps in desperate need of rebuilding.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
