MCU Phase 4: 15 Essential Rumours & Theories You Need To Know

6. Namor Will FINALLY Join The MCU

Namor Defenders
Marvel Comics

The Rumour:

Namor the Sub-Mariner is one of the oldest characters in Marvel's library, and actually even predates DC's Aquaman by two whole years. Despite arguably having a worse costume (those green trunks aren't doing him any favours, let's face it), Namor's omission from the MCU can perhaps be considered the most frustrating mentioned so far.

He's such a pivotal, and iconic, character within Marvel's library, and it often seems as though no one knows if it's even possible for him to appear in the first place, with his rights apparently tied up between Marvel and Universal in a similar way to Hulk's.

That said, fans do believe that it's only a matter of time until the Sub-Mariner appears on the big screen, with Kevin Feige having even reportedly said that the character "could make an appearance", although he's still said to be working out the intricacies of "if and when".

The Response:

This one's a tad more difficult to come down on either side, because Namor has given Marvel a pretty big headache the last few years. Universal are said to own a stake in the character and with that making production difficult, it may just be the case that the character doesn't show up at all.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
