MCU Phase 4: 9 Insane Fan Theories You Won't Believe

1. Secret Invasion Will Be The Next Big Event

It was pretty obvious that, as soon as Marvel confirmed the Skrulls would become a feature of the MCU, fans would get their hopes up. The aliens are a massive presence in the comics, having been more closely associated with the Fantastic Four than the Avengers, and the announcement that they'll be coming to the big-screen promises plenty of changes for the MCU as we now know it.

For those not in the know, the Skrulls' main deal is that they can morph and shape-shift into anyone of their choosing. So bad was the level of deception in the comics that, in the events of Secret Invasion, it was revealed that the Skrulls had been masquerading as some of Earth's mightiest heroes, villains and figures for what could've been years. The book itself was fairly lacklustre, but the Invasion of the Body Snatchers-style premise possesses bags of potential for an onscreen feature (or two).

Said potential has been so evident that fans have already set about speculating as to how great a role the Skrulls will actually have in the MCU. While they've already been pinned down to an appearance in Captain Marvel, it's only been suggested that they could be taking a leading role elsewhere. If that does come in the form of Secret Invasion - and a deception of Jack Finney proportions is on the way - then Phase 4 could just be the boldest phase yet.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
