MCU Phase 4: How And When We'll See Mutants
4. What These Changes Mean For The MCU's Mutants
By not doing away with Wanda's past and insisting that she has always carried the X-gene in her system, Marvel Studios have opened themselves up to a world of possibilities without doing a disservice to any die-hard fans. But the classification of Wanda as a mutant does a lot more than bring her in line with her comic-verse persona. It also serves to fill in some gaps that were left by previous instalments in the Infinity Saga.
Since the DNA profiles of mutants are different from humans, this would explain why the Maximoff twins were the only two survivors of Strucker's experiments. Similar to how Peter Quill was able to hold on to the Power Stone without exploding due to his odd parentage; Wanda and Pietro were able survive prolonged exposure to the Mind Stone because of their evolved physiology.
The presence of an X-gene could also be used to explain how Janet van Dyne was able to activate her healing powers by spending a prolonged period of time in the Quantum Realm. Her dialogue to Hank in Ant-Man and The Wasp did mention that this was the resultant of both adaptation and evolution, after all, which is how Magneto always described mutants in the Fox properties.
So it looks like we can expect Marvel to both introduce new mutants and assign the label to characters we have already come to love during the runtime of Phase 4. Whether this is the resultant of Shuri sharing the knowledge of Wakanda or not, we'll have to wait and see. But while we're waiting, let's take a look at when Marvel is likely to introduce us to some new mutants for the first time.
