Scott Derrickson's attempt at cracking the Sorcerer Supreme back in 2016 was a welcome change of pace for Marvel fans when it released, with its shorter run-time, origin format and cosmic focus having made it standout from the rest of the MCU's other offerings, which were still riding the high set by The Winter Soldier.

Despite lacking the buzz of the MCU's other offerings, Derrickson's film about Doctor Stephen Strange was a welcome change of pace in a universe awash with Sci-Fi and espionage, with Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tilda Swinton all turning in great performances as its leads. The film's post-credits sequence set up Mordo's (Ejiofor) inevitable turn to villainy, and with a sequel nigh guaranteed, it would make sense for a Strange sequel to fill one of those remaining 2020 slots.

There's little chance of the Sorcerer Supreme departing in Infinity War, with Cumberbatch clearly earmarked to take up the void left by Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr.'s looming departures, so it stands to reason that Marvel will want to place the character front and centre to Phase Four's opening year.

Add to that the fact the first Strange film was pretty fantastic, albeit overlooked, and it's a no-brainer for Marvel to sanction a follow-up.
