Men In Black International Review: 2 Ups & 7 Downs
2. The Lame, Forgettable Villains
Even Men in Black II managed to come up with a memorable antagonist despite its many issues, yet International can't manage to make a single one of its several villains stick.
First and foremost we have two shape-shifting alien twins (Laurent and Larry Bourgeois) who make numerous appearances throughout the film yet present little in the way of personality.
It doesn't help that neither the precise nature of their characters nor their powers are ever made especially clear.
Elsewhere there's Rebecca Ferguson's aforementioned arms dealer, Riza, and though Ferguson certainly looks the part kitted out in a ridiculous wig and get-up, she only scarcely feels connected to the overall plot, as though the film simply drafted her in to fill some time.
As for the overarching antagonist? It's a spoiler to reveal quite how that turns out, but needless to say, it's groan-inducingly predictable and completely formulaic.
