Men In Black International Review: 2 Ups & 7 Downs
Ups...
2. Kumail Nanjiani's Pawny Steals The Show
Every single human character is decisively upstaged by Pawny, a pocket-sized CGI alien sidekick introduced roughly mid-way through the film, as played with endearing enthusiasm by Kumail Nanjiani.
For starters, Pawny gets most of the movie's funniest lines, the character's design is pretty neat, and he's basically the closest the film ever gets to evoking the same eccentric vibe of its predecessors.
It's a shame he isn't in the movie more, honestly, but rather than simply feeling like merch-bait for the kiddie crowd, he actually brings most of what counts as genuine entertainment value to the table.
Even if International tanks hard enough not to get a sequel, Sony would be well-advised to bring Pawny back for any future movies, be they reboots, remakes or "reimaginings."
