5. Bad Boys II
Bad Boys II is a Rorschach test people take to prove whether they love - or despise the work of Michael Bay. Its an epic two and a half hour destruction derby, filled with gunfights, car chases, tasteless gags, sexism, louder car chases, homophobic jokes and - finally - ending with most of Cuba being blown up. The movie is, depending on the viewers mood, an unhinged masterpiece made by a visionary or a vile piece of crap. Some gags are hilarious while others like the scene where Martin Lawrence gets high on ecstasy are damn near unbearable. Some of the action setpieces are fantastic, like the 360-degree gunfight or the freeway chase. Others like chasing the morgue van and running over dead bodies should have been cut. Bad Boys II is Michael Bays Id in movie form, and a major problem is that he refuses to rein his excess in. Some jokes or action scenes go on way too long, and the chemistry between Smith and Lawrence isnt potent anymore; Laurence, in particular, is downright obnoxious for most of the movie. Logical demands that Bad Boys II be labelled a bad movie; but like anyone whos seen Hot Fuzz will tell you, that doesnt stop it being insanely watchable.
