1. Scott Pilgrim - Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010)
Edgar Wrights third film based on the graphic novel of the same name by Bryan Lee OMalley, follows the 22 year old Scott Pilgrim (Cera) who becomes acquainted with the intriguing and visually stunning Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). However, in order to win Ramona, Scott learns that in order to be with the girl of his dreams, he must defeat her seven evil exes, who persevere to vanquish Scott. The film breathed new life into the graphic novel adaption, but performed poorly at the box office. It did fare significantly better when released on DVD, leading to a small cult following. Ceras performance in this film as the courageous boyfriend demonstrated his flexibility and versatility to take on any role given to him and thus performed giftedly. He demonstrates that he can be the frightened and naive teenager, the courageous and strong-willed underdog or the amusing and sentimental boyfriend. Many actors and actresses who appear to conform to fulfilling similar roles fail miserably when taking on a different role much to their own demise, due to neither taking to their role naturally nor being perceived seriously by the audience. Cera is excluded from this fate. Like with his performances in the previous films mentioned, Cera reprised the ability to play the underdog that audiences would laugh at, but also support and applaud. Thus making him the awkwardly naive and consistently funny teenager of the post John-Hughes generation.
