The Mondo movie is a much maligned genre of films, probably because it appeals to the more prurient side of our nature. Finding out what other cultures do for kicks was the remit of the original Mondo films. There was a lot of gawking at the 'savages' and Mondo film makers trying to outdo each other in terms of outrageousness. During the 1970s, Mondo Movies became more violent and gruesome until the inevitable happened - Faces of Death. This little film spawned its own subgenre - the Death Movie - which exclusively deals with footage of dead or dying people. I have chosen in this article, to leave the Death movies largely untouched because as well as being deeply unsavoury, once you have seen one, you have seen them all (they recycle material like bejaysus). I have watched many Mondo movies and whilst I cannot say I 'enjoyed' them all, I thought I would do a bit of Mondo awareness raising with this article so that you don't feel left out of my depraved little party...
