In a world of Hollywood mega-franchises and cinematic universes, it's understandable that fans may be curious as to what may follow after the Mortal Kombat movie. While Greg Russo confirmed in an interview that the cast and crew were currently focusing on just making the best film they could, he did admit that as a writer he can't help but think about future story potentials.

When looking at the Mortal Kombat universe, it's easy to see a range of different directions the franchise could develop. Alongside sequels that could continue the main narrative, spin-offs regarding certain characters almost seems a given. The turbulent history between both Scorpion and Sub-Zero's clans could make for an interesting spin-off film or even television series.

Likely it's all dependent on the success of the first flick. If the film does well at the box office it's likely to continue to develop as a franchise, especially as there is so much source material to draw from and adapt. After all, there are eleven games in the main franchise alone that you could translate to the big screen.

Who knows, we may even seen a Mortal Kombat VS DC Universe story translated to the big screen, Warner Brothers do hold all the rights to the characters and James Wan is already attached to the DCEU! A fan can hope.
