Mortal Kombat Movie Trailer: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

7. Up - A Great Visual Style

Mortal Kombat 2021 movie
Warner Bros.

It is safe to say that this is going to be one hell of a good looking film. It's already clear that many creative choices are heading in the right direction, as there were no outstanding issues with character presentations, and the general aesthetics are a perfect continuation of the game's presentation.

Like the VFX, it's clear that the budget for the costumes and cinematography here is far greater than previous incarnations. McQuoid's visual route is going to focus on making the series look gritty and dark, with muted colours and more realistic set-pieces.

However, it's also apparent that some of the more cartoonish aspects aren't being forgotten, as can be seen with the stylised violence, exciting imagery and fantastic costume design.

The outfits on display here are beautiful, with Sub-Zero's menacing look being a particular highlight. His iconic get-up is filled to the brim with unique details and looks like a natural evolution from MK games. But he isn't the only character to have some style, as Jax, Liu Kang, Kung Lao and many more can attest.

This dark and visceral aesthetic - from the trailer at least - looks like a great choice, and no matter what happens, the film should at least be visually pleasing.
