10 More Sequels That Totally Ruined The Previous Movie's Ending

3. The Ghostbusters Go Out Of Business - Ghostbusters II

The original Ghostbusters ends with the heroes defeating the villainous Gozer the Gozerian (Slavitza Jovan) and being celebrated on the streets of New York City for saving the day.

A totally upbeat ending that sets up a sequel where the Ghostbusters are firmly embraced by the world at large, then? Eh, not quite.

Ghostbusters II picks up five years after the events of the first film, where the Ghostbusters have been sued by the city of New York for the property damage they caused while battling the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

A court order also prevents them from carrying out their ghost-hunting activities, effectively putting them out of business, enough that Ray (Dan Aykroyd) and Winston (Ernie Hudson) resort to appearing at kids' birthday parties as the Ghostbusters in order to make ends meet.

It's about as transparent as "sequel resets" come, aggressively undoing the first film's triumphant ending so the Ghostbusters have to be built back up again. Yawn.
