Disney's ongoing live action franchise is criticised for being such a profit-driven venture with fans often asking the company to leave their beloved films alone but undoubtedly one of the strengths of the live action format is the ability to make an animated, fantasy world into one which feels real. Mulan does not disappoint and we're gifted a stunning series of visuals that depict Mulan's story like never before.

From the very opening shot in which we see a lone Mulan riding her horse at dawn, we feel the young warrior's steely determination and the trailer only blooms from there. From great expansive shots of the story's infamous battle against the Northern invaders to the quiet tranqulity of the beautiful Chinese garden of Mulan's home, Mulan seems to whole heartedly translate this animated treasure into a feast for the eyes.

These visuals do so much more than serve the story justice - they demonstrate and admire the beauty of China in this updated take on the country's legendary warrior. Directed by Niki Caro and with cinematography by Mandy Walker, this all female duo gives us hope that the rest of the film follows much in the same footsteps.
