Mulan Trailer Reactions: 5 Ups & 2 Downs

It's refreshing to see Disney create a film that truly seeks to represent the country it is set in. With Crazy Rich Asians as the exception, many recent Hollywood films have been whitewashed - Ghost In the Shell and The Great Wall being the most notable examples.
When news of Mulan's casting broke, Disney assured audiences that in this film, that wouldn't be the case and the teaser trailer seeks to assure audiences further with seemingly all of the cast speaking in their native accents.
Although not completely the case, the majority of the original animated film's cast spoke with American accents. Much more recently, the soon to be released live action retelling of The Lion King although set in Africa, features a very much American accented cast. This year's Aladdin was more of a mixed bag but the film's leads, Aladdin and Jasmine, also spoke with American accents.
Mulan seems to go the distance and commit itself to honouring its Chinese heritage. In celebrating its setting and endeavouring to create an authentic take on the legendary story, Mulan immerses us into its world.
