The Muppets: Ranking Every Movie From Worst To Best

5. Muppet Treasure Island

Just like The Muppets Christmas Carol, this one was also based on a celebrated literary work in Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. Directed by Jim Henson's son Brian, you can really see the gap the great man had left. Whatever he brought to The Muppets, it was intangible - something that couldn't be copied-and-pasted to the same effect. Quite simply, there was too much plot and not enough Muppets. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, they're really the things we came to see - it's a good job the source material is so riveting and Tim Curry more so as Long John Silver. He takes every bit of charisma he has shown in works like Rocky Horror Picture Show and Stephen King's It, and hams it up in a scene-chewing performance as the infamous marauding pirate in search of treasure. This one may have been short on the Muppets in some respect, but the musical numbers, jokes and action turn what would just be a Muppet film into a truly entertaining swashbuckling adventure all round - despite losing the creative genius of Jim Henson.

I love all things imaginative, from the page to the screen, and nurture a soft spot for Donald Sutherland and Daniel Bryan.
