Mute Review: 4 Ups & 6 Downs

2. Paul Rudd's Against-Type Performance

Mute Paul Rudd
Netflix/EW

Paul Rudd gives one of the more intriguing and against-type performances of his career in this film as American surgeon Cactus Bill, who holds a key to Naadirah's whereabouts and sees Rudd cleverly flipping the script on his usual charming persona.

From the early glimpses of his character's offbeat sensibilities, it's clear that a sinister undercurrent percolates underneath, and Rudd does fine work slowly unraveling the full extent of this.

Yes, the aforementioned tonal and scripting issues do chip away at the full potential of his performance, but he's easily its most praise-worthy aspect, and acquits himself far better than many may have anticipated.
