Nerve Review: 6 Ups & 5 Downs

2. Rob Simonsen's Score

Nerve Dave Franco

Complimenting the movie's superb visuals is a cracking score from Rob Simonsen, and while the combination of synth and neon has been arguably overused to the point of cliche in recent years (especially in recent films from Nicolas Winding Refn), it rarely feels as appropriate as it does in this noirish tech thriller.

Simonsen's score functions extremely well both as a standalone album and a pulsing accompaniment to the gorgeous visuals, heightening the tension but also not lacking ethereal moments of breathing room every now and then. In short, even if the movie on the whole doesn't quite work for you, you'll probably dig the technical package.
