Nerve Review: 6 Ups & 5 Downs

1. It's Surprisingly Tense

That's right, when Nerve gets tense, it gets really, really tense. Even though a lot of the dares are fairly underwhelming, there are a couple of truly hair-raising ones, especially one involving scaling a ladder suspended over two 10-story apartment windows, and a certain character climbing atop a giant construction crane and having to free-hang from one hand for five seconds.

These scenes will induce sweaty-palmed anxiety in many viewers, especially as the movie is unpredictable enough that death could always be around the corner. Joost and Schulman do a fantastic job milking the tension, aided by the fact that most of the dares have a time limit and egg the player on to complete them as quickly as possible.

Don't be surprised to find your hand dug into your seat without realising during some of the movie's more high-wire sequences.
