18. Ghost in the Cell
Beyond its applause-worthy title, Ghost in the Cell actually has a killer premise to go along with it.
In an infamous prison, an invisible force begins brutally murdering inmates, forcing the prison's various opposed factions and even corrupt guards to team up in order to survive.
Director Joko Anwar (Impetigore, Grave Torture) has proven himself a dab hand at many different genres, so why not an ultra-violent black comedy?
The trailer for Ghost in the Cell looks absolutely riotous, focused on the increasing disorder that such a situation would cause, and of course, some insanely over-the-top brutality.
Anwar's iconoclastic filmmaking style may not be for all tastes, but the world could absolutely use more totally off-the-wall cinema from visionary filmmakers like him.
Word on this one's been surprisingly quiet despite premiering at the Berlinale back in February, but hopefully it might become a bonkers breakout when it lands internationally later in the year.
