Queens of the Dead is the spirited directorial debut of Tina Romero, daughter of zombie movie pioneer George A. Romero, which makes the most of its riotous drag-queens-versus-the-undead premise, aided by the fine efforts of a game ensemble cast.

While George A. Romero's zombie films generally performed extremely well at the box office, expectations were certainly different for this more fringe homage - especially as IFC released it in just 150 U.S. cinemas.

But even with rave reviews, Queens of the Dead grossed just $113,123 on the big screen, suggesting that the film's marketing failed to sufficiently sell its premise.

Even accepting that a zombie movie centred around drag and queer culture was always going to have a limited audience, it's very clearly a film best watched with a crowd, and so it's a shame this one didn't catch on as the campy midnight movie it undeniably is.

As horror streaming service Shudder helped co-finance the film, though, that probably takes a lot of the sting out of its box office run.
