20 Awesome Recent Horror Movies That Flopped At The Box Office

10. Azrael

Azrael
Shudder

Azrael is one of the more intriguing horror experiments of the last few years, given that it takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where a violent cult believes that speech is a sin, meaning that the film features almost no spoken dialogue.

And while Azrael's spare approach may not be for all tastes, E. L. Katz's tense direction and another killer - and mute! - performance from the ever-great Samara Weaving make this a highly distinctive romp well worth watching.

Yet even with the film starring Weaving, one of the most popular scream queens of the modern horror era, IFC Films gave Azrael a rather paltry theatrical release, dropping it in just 762 U.S. cinemas while barely marketing it at all.

As a result it grossed a pitiful $666,611 worldwide, and it goes without saying that the film's budget was many, many times more than that.

A mostly dialogue-free horror film was always going to be a tricky sell to the mainstream, but IFC didn't even give this one a fighting chance.
