20 Awesome Recent Horror Movies That Flopped At The Box Office
8. Oddity
Oddity is a film that definitely seemed primed to outperform industry expectations, given the fandom for filmmaker Damian McCarthy (Caveat), its creepy, widely-marketed wooden golem, and the rave reviews it received after an award-winning premiere at SXSW 2024.
But Oddity topped out at just $1.9 million, which, even accepting the film's modest construction, simply can't translate to commercial success.
For one, the film just didn't have much of a marketing presence despite the compelling imagery featured within it, and with Shudder co-producing the film, it was only released in 790 theatres domestically.
Even though streaming was obviously the end-game goal here, with a more aggressive marketing push it feels like a film as atmospheric, well-crafted, and widely praised as Oddity should've been able to make many more times than it actually did.
Given that McCarthy's next film, Hokum, stars Adam Scott and is being released by Neon, it should be far more commercially successful.
