We Bury the Dead is a refreshingly contemplative take on the zombie movie, revolving around a woman (Daisy Ridley) who seeks out her missing husband in the midst of an undead apocalypse.

Writer-director Zak Hilditch clearly relishes subverting expectations of the zombie subgenre, all while Daisy Ridley gives one of her finest performances to date.

Despite receiving strong reviews and starring one of the faces of modern Star Wars, however, We Bury the Dead topped out at just $4 million worldwide.

While we don't know the film's exact budget, Ridley's involvement and its overall high production quality clearly don't suggest a shoestring price tag.

It is at least clear why the film flopped, though - for one, it was released by Vertical Entertainment, a boutique distributor with a history of meagre box office returns.

But more than that, they opted to market the movie rather dishonestly, selling it as an action-packed Zombie Flick, ensuring many were left disappointed when the end product was actually a more thoughtful and sober-minded take.
