We might still be waiting for Happy Death Day 3 to get going, but to tide you over in the meantime Jessica Rothe is back with another thoroughly entertaining sci-fi horror film.

In Affection, Rothe stars as Ellie, a woman with a condition which resets her memory, leaving her unable to remember her husband or daughter, in turn forcing her to confront the horrifying truth of her predicament.

It's almost too much of a spoiler to even call Affection sci-fi, because it takes one hell of a sharp mid-film turn that entirely turns its plot upside down.

The result is a bold swing that won't resonate with everyone, but as an attempt to examine themes of domestic abuse and trauma through a heightened lens, it's nightmarishly effective in its own right.

And of course, Rothe is absolutely fantastic in the central role, giving perhaps her most full-heartedly Dramatic performance to date and suitably rising to the occasion.
