20 Announced Movie Sequels NOBODY Expected

Ron Howard's Jim Carrey-starring How the Grinch Stole Christmas is one of the most iconic Christmas comedies of the last 30 years, and even accepting both the film's commercial success and ongoing popularity of the title character, this absolutely seemed like a total one-off movie.

But in June Universal announced that they were officially developing a Grinch sequel, with Howard set to return and Carrey currently in talks to reprise his role.

It's an especially surprising announcement considering not only the passage of time since the original but also Carrey's oft-noted discomfort with the Grinch makeup, prompting him to previously suggest he'd only reprise the role through performance capture technology.

It remains to be seen precisely how that will shake out and whether the sequel will re-team Carrey with any other returning cast members, but the Grinch's continued popularity at least makes it possible that this sequel turns out a nostalgia-fuelled hit.
