Nick Nolte: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

3. Jack Cates - Another 48 Hrs.

Oh what a difference a star-making turn can make, as the winning buddy formula of Walter Hill's seminal eighties buddy picture gets kicked to the curb in favour of this full on Eddie Murphy vehicle. Arriving eight years after its predecessor, and encumbered by an early nineties, high concept story treatment from Murphy himself, Another 48 Hrs. sees Nolte's Jack Cate's under the cosh and in need of some assistance from his old buddy Reggie (Murphy). What transpires is a feature-length platform for Murphy to run riot and show off his already getting tired motormouth shtick. While this isn't exactly bad enough to sully the original, this will perhaps always remain Nolte's most pedestrian roles.
