Obsessed With Film made the Good Website Guide 2008!
It's easy to track when Obsessed With Film gets mentioned online. Most of the time when the site gets mentioned by one of our peers, they will link back to us and it shows up on our blog stats. Which is always nice, it's kind of a weird way of being able to wire-tap or eavesdrop in on a conversation about yourself without any danger of being caught. However it's much harder in print. Around six weeks ago, I actually think it was the day QUANTUM OF SOLACE came out (I could find out but I'm too lazy), Peter stumbled across a mention in that day's edition of the Guardian newspaper where they had taken a snippet of my review for GHOST TOWN and my name was aside it; big, black and in bold in a daily national newspaper. Weird and very flattering. But of course if Peter had never stumbled across it, we wouldn't know. They neglect to tell us these things when they use our name in print and without the URL trackback, you have no way of being able to see how this effects your user stats. For all I know we could have been in a newspaper once a week. We only happened to stumble across that mention because Peter happened to be flicking through the Guardian that day. A similar thing happened yesterday... I stumbled across a book called The Good Web Site Guide 2008 by Graham Edmonds. I don't know why I had the urge to look in it but when you own a site, I dunno, you just feel like your part of a community somehow.
Now I swear to God, I was actually looking to see which of our peers would be mentioned, the sites that do what we do but in a much better fashion. I wasn't looking to see if my site was mentioned but low and behold, I found this entry....
http://whatculture.com - An above average movie blog with the latest movie news, reviews and discussion. Now granted whoever pitched for OWF's entry in the book clearly used our old tagline to finish off their statement as we use to have the advert "movie news, reviews and discussion" at the top of the site. And "above average" is hardly the most flattering comments but believe me I will take it. For someone who doesn't get much compliments in life, I can assure you that if some random girl came up to me and said I was "above average" attractive, I would be very pleased with that indeed. Still Obsessed With Film should not be in the top 12 (I think they listed 12) movie sites in the world. I don't remember their being a mention for Ain't It Cool News or /Film who do the job I do so much better. But hey, I will take it. Although they are wrong and even though OWF has secured interviews with the likes of Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller, Werner Herzog and Mary Elizabeth Winstead... even though we were quoted in the New York Times... even though we got our quote on the front of the IN THE HANDS OF THE GODS DVD... even though we have seen staff from this site publish their own books...this is still probably my proudest moment of running this site. Even if the link wouldn't really do us that much credit. Many thanks to whoever it was who pitched for OWF to be part of the book.
