Old Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

2. Shyamalan's Creative Visuals

Shyamalan isn't exactly a director fondly remembered for his unique camerawork - he's a functional stylist who seems far more interested in working with his actors and in shaping the tonal aspects of a film.

But Old just might be his most visually interesting work to date, experimenting with a variety of shooting styles which help accentuate the film's continually off-kilter, unsettling mood.

Not all of these techniques will work for everyone, as he often places the camera in strange and unexpected places that few other filmmakers at his level would, but it's just neat to see him toying around with his dominant aesthetic rather than relying on his usual straightforward shooting style.

Shyamalan also takes full advantage of the gorgeous Dominican Republic setting, making this his only film to feature no scenes shot in his hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
