33. The Hidden Advantage Of The Tesseract - Captain America: The First Avenger

Though it's not so much the case now with MCU films bringing millions and sometimes billions in at the box office, there was a time when a huge portion of the behind-the-scenes decisions were based around driving toy and merchandise sales.

For one thing, it's why the Hulk was chosen for a solo outing so early, and shamefully, since the powers that be at the time believed that female heroes wouldn't move toys, it's part of the reason it took so long for a female-led outing from Marvel Studios.

While many of the things done were done with this in mind, sometimes toy sales benefited as something more of an indirect result of what was going on in the films. One such example came with Captain America: The First Avenger, as the toy lines had a huge upshot from H.Y.D.R.A. using Tesseract-powered energy weapons and flamethrowers instead of typical guns.

Not only did this make the toys more interesting, differentiating them in an obviously crowded market, but according to The Reign of Marvel Studios, it also meant they were free from being marketed as Nazis; something that made Marvel's toy division very happy indeed.
