Oscar 2014 Nominations: 9 Big Surprises (And 1 We Should Have Seen Coming)

6. The Great Gatsby€™s Reputation Sinks Young And Beautiful

Like so many high profile movies, people seemed to go into Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby (pushed back from last year€™s awards season) with their minds already made up, eager to get the film over with so they could declare how misguided it was. What everyone seemed to miss is that, as with Romeo + Juliet, Luhrmann wasn€™t trying to make the definitive film adaptation of the material. With the contemporary music and vibrant CGI, this was one man€™s interpretation of F. Scott Fitzgerald€™s novel. Even if you couldn€™t get past that, there€™s no denying the craftsmanship involved in creating the world of the film; it may not have been accurate to the 1920s, but it sure felt authentic. The Academy have noticed that (to some extent), giving it nods for Costume and Production Design, but didn€™t go as far to offer it a chance at Best Original Song. Lana Del Rey€™s Young Young And Beautiful is a great listen anyway and paired with the film's longing tone works even better. A favourite to get nominated in the category, this isn€™t a high profile snub, but needs mentioning all the same.
