Oscar 2014 Nominations: 9 Big Surprises (And 1 We Should Have Seen Coming)
4. Tom Hanks And Emma Thompson Snubbed In Acting Categories
Each year brings with it a major actor missing or two out on a nomination. Things are always particularly tricky when David O Russell is in town - on his current form every film gets a nomination in each acting category - but I dont think anyone saw two screen greats both denied the chance to bag their third Oscar. As pointed out in the intro, Best Actor is an incredibly competitive category this year and all the nominees aside from Matthew McConaughey (for Dallas Buyers Club) need to be there to give their film a legitimate chance of Best Picture. Captain Phillips is an additional entry in the big category, not getting a Best Director nod, so doesnt need the boost. And thus Tom Hanks is out of the running. Sad, but not the worst thing in the categories. Actress is more of an outrage. She obviously wouldnt have won (Cate Blanchetts got this one guys), but Emma Thompson well and truly deserved to get some recognition for her turn as P. L. Travers. The best thing in Saving Mr Banks, in which she acted opposite Hanks as Walt Disney, its almost as if the Academy were trying to avoid anyone following Daniel Day Lewis. Oh well, at least Meryl Streep got another nomination for a relatively unremarkable performance.
