Oscar Nominations 2021: 7 Ups & 8 Downs

7. The Most Diverse Oscar Nominees Ever
The Oscars have been routinely criticised for their lack of diversity in recent years, given the predominantly white acting nominees and mostly-male directing nominees.
With the Academy inviting a more diverse slate of artists to join its membership in recent years, it's great to see that reflected in the most diverse list of nominees in Oscar history.
Of the 20 acting nominees this year, only 11 (55%) were white, and just four (20%) white Americans. Better still, Steven Yuen (Minari) and Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal) became the first Asian-American and Muslim Best Actor nominees respectively.
Best Director also saw two women - Chloe Zhao (Nomadland) and Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) - nominated for the first time in history, and Zhao is the first non-white woman to ever receive a nomination in the category.
Simply, you love to see it.
