Oscar Nominations 2021: 7 Ups & 8 Downs
7. Glenn Close Nominated For Best Supporting Actress
Though it wasn't remotely surprising to see Glenn Close nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Hillbilly Elegy, it sure was a lazy pick by the Academy.
This marks Close's eighth nomination without a win so far and also makes her just the third actor in history - after Amy Irving and James Coco - to receive Oscar and Razzie nominations for the same performance, which is almost hilarious enough to merit her nomination.
While her performance isn't bad by any conventional metric, it just sticks out compared to the actually great works of her fellow nominees, while taking a spot away from worthier actors such as Dominique Fishback (Judas and the Black Messiah), Jodie Foster (The Mauritanian), Helena Zengel (News of the World), and Ellen Burstyn (Pieces of a Woman).
Best Supporting Actress is one of the more chaotic and wide-open categories this year, so don't be surprised if Close finally sneaks the win outright, if only to finally put her long-suffering Oscar bridesmaid status to rest.
